ABOUT

"I travel not to go anywhere, but to go. I travel for

travel's sake.

The great affair is to move."

Robert Louis Stevenson, novelist who was curious and restless

Meet Fred

As a globetrotter, my interests in art and art history merge with being a filmmaker and photographer. With these skills, I produce documentaries and content that explore how art and architecture are the embodiment of a place and culture or maybe even shape them. I am interested in the entire stream of movement that is the adventure.

In the last four years, I have published two books. The first was a photographic monograph of my work on the vintage motels of America, in particular, Las Vegas, titled Motel Vegas. In 2020, along with Burning Man co-founder Will Roger, I co-wrote and contributed writing to a book that explores the role of art and artists in face of global climate change. This has been published as Handbook for a Burning Age.

After a successful academic career as a university professor in the arts and humanities, I resigned from my tenure in 2009, remaining now as an Adjunct Professor. After successfully testing the logistics of teaching courses online from wherever I travel, I embarked on a journey of teaching which I continue upon from my home in Siem Reap, Cambodia.

Movement is the key to everything I do. Sitting for too long without seeing the other side of the mountain makes me wonder what I am missing. Why don’t you find out with me? If you want to wander, along with the people I meet along the way, will show you the sites…you’ll learn a lot. I promise.

This three-minute video introduces how Fred began his travels.

He also discusses some of his philosophy of teaching, making art and globetrotting.
